PLC Students Named Regional Winners in State Contest!

Southside Performance Learning Center students (L to R) Clarence Jones and Deosha West were recently named regional winners in the Communities In Schools (CIS) Student Achievement Month contest. Designed to help students set goals and gain a better understanding of the importance of academic achievement and staying in school, the contest featured entries from 250 students across the state in four categories – written expression, creative expression, public speaking and computer technology.

Jones competed in computer technology and West competed in public speaking. Their entries were submitted in the state contest, the winners of which will receive a new computer, printer and educational software applicable to their grade level. As a senior, West would have the option of choosing a $1,000 scholarship.

Communities In Schools, the nation’s largest dropout prevention organization, partners with local school districts and community organizations to connect needed resources and services to students and families. The Southside Performance Learning Center was developed through a CIS model that combines strong personal relationships between school staff and students with an intense focus on academic achievement.
